Hybrid two-fluid and kinetic equations have been used to study ballooning modes in a tokamak. These modes separate into two branches: a modified ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) ballooning mode and a toroidally induced ion temperature gradient (η i) both model and actual high beta equilibria we find that the η i mode (η i = ∂ℓn T i /∂ℓn N i) may dominate the ideal MHD mode. Abstract. These four papers on highbeta.. tokamak instabilities, fundamental time scales for flux conserving tokamak heating, intense tokamak heating in the adiabatic approximation, and the Elmo Bumpy Torus were presented at the Workshop on High Beta Tokamaks held at Varenna, Italy on September ,

Two examples are considered, an isothermal plasma with constant resistivity, and a Author: J.J. Field. By systematically doing the higher‐order theory, the predictions of the conventional ballooning theory (CBT) are examined for nonideal systems.
For the complex solvability condition to be satisfied, radial variation of the lowest‐order mode amplitude needs to be invoked. It turns out, however, that even this procedure with its concomitant modifications of eigenvalues and eigenstructures Cited by: Strauss H.R.
